Fresh, Easy and Breezy - Its JANE'S PARTY!

The Jane's Party CD has been played and replayed and just thoroughly enjoyed at the Coulter household for months now. This group of young Canadian guys have an easy, casual sound and style that is very appealing. I have a vision of them just sitting around, picking up their various instruments and simply playing as they are heard here. They've played some of the great Toronto venues like The Horseshoe and Hugh's Room and we're looking forward to hearing them at one of Northwestern Ontario's rising venues - Concerts in the Parking Lot! Also, be sure to tell any college or university students in your life about this one - they won't want to miss it either.

CITPL 2009: Summer Schedule

We're happy to say that the fourth annual "Concerts in the Parking Lot!" series is pretty much set to go! As always, the concerts will take place in the Superior Place Mall (parking lot in front of Pizza Hut) at 7:00pm every summer Wednesday evening.

This summer's schedule is as follows:

Folks are asked to bring a lawn chair and a (suggested $5) donation for the performers. CDs and Ts will be available for purchase. Keep an eye out in the community for our posters or, to learn more about the scheduled artists, feel free to click on anyone from the "2009 Artists" column to go to their website. Many artists have both a personal site as well as a "myspace" site. Visit the site often for updates.

We are confidently looking forward to a sunny, warm summer filled with lots of great live music. Join us in our vision, won't you?! But hey, the show will go on either way ...

Three lovely ladies, three-part harmony, three times the fun - The Good Lovelies are all that and more! This talented, creative trio have only been together for two short years but have created a sound and a style that is all their own. You will enjoy their buttery-smooth vocals and flawless harmony (think Andrews Sisters) along with their much-loved witty repartee. These talented women play a wide variety of instruments varying from guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin and more.

Do yourself a spirit-lifting favour! Come on out and see 'crooning' Caroline Brooks, 'cuddly' Kerri Ough and 'scintillating' Sue Passmore when they play in Marathon on Monday, March 30th at 7:30pm at the Cross Country Ski Club. $10 or pay what you can.

The Bicycles are rolling into town ...

 

The Bicycles are on tour and coming to town! You may recall that in an earlier post, I mentioned that we felt that we couldn't limit this group to "the basement" and that they would likely have a wider appeal with the younger set. As hoped, the high school is hosting this band and is opening it up to the community. Hopefully, you'll find some time to drop in and support this event and it will be a good fundraiser for them!

County Country

The County Boys most recent CD, "1, 2, 3, 4 ..."  (sorry Fiest!) has been playing quite regularly in our kitchen since it's arrival. The Boys  play a sort of edgier form of bluegrass - even leaning towards punk at times. Bluegrass-punk ... a new genre perhaps? The County Boys' uncluttered sound, fun lyrics and  catchy tunes are great to listen to. I can't tell you how often I find myself singing "A Thespian Stole My Beer". No really. And you will be too. If you come down to The Lot on July 2nd for our 2008 summer series kick off!

Celtic Heather

"Heather Dale is a Canadian recording artist, writing Celtic songs for the 21st century."
Known for her interpretations of ancient legends, Heather's evocative recordings have earned her fans around the world. Heather excels at finding modern relevance within old material, and fuses the Celtic folk tradition with a healthy mix of modern blues, jazz and world music influences. Her original music  is reminiscent of Loreena McKennitt, Sarah McLachlan, and Steeleye Span. Along with her rich Celtic-inspired vocals, Heather Dale and her partner Ben Deschamps play over a dozen folk instruments in their live performances, ranging from mountain dulcimer to double bass. We'll hear everything from soft laments to powerful Celtic rock at "The Lot" on August 6th!

As the name Cosmic Granola might indicate, get ready to hear something a little bit different when these guys hit the parking lot on August 13th, 2008! Nate Zahn (lead guitar and main vocals), Pete Bastedo (bass and vocals) and Tylor Miller (drums and vocals) are the energy that makes this dynamic trio tick. Be prepared to groove to the Granola's original blues, folk, funk, reggae, bluegrass and of course, rock and roll. Can't wait to hear them? Check out their homepage at www.cosmicgranola.com or at their MySpace site for a teaser. You're gonna love these guys and their "yet to be named" form of rock and roll.

Washboard Who?!

Washboard Hank is coming to town! In the first confirmation for our 2008 season, Hank has confirmed that he will perform at the Concerts in the Parking Lot series on July 9th.

If you've ever seen this guy in action, you'll know that he's not only an amazing musician but is a great entertainer too! If you've never had the oportunity, you are in for some great music and lots of fun!

This blurb from his website probably states it best. "His repertoire includes bluegrass, rockabilly, country, television themes and Oktoberfest. He can go from sensitive to manic to ridiculous in an instant. Don't blink, you'll miss something good."

This is a guy that on the surface, appears to be a kids' performer but is in fact, simultaneously entertaining the adults in the audience as well. If you want to see a musician who plays just about every thing - including the kitchen sink - make sure you're at "The Parking Lot" on July 9th!
